Paint a room.

Sometimes, all that's needed in a room is a quick refresh. Pick up a tester pot and experiment. Maybe you are interested to see if a contrasting colour on one wall works well?

For a small investment of a good roller, a paint brush and a bit of time, you could transform a space.

Wallpaper a wall.

Painted walls are the simplest change you can make to your decor, but in some rooms, you may want to introduce more pattern.

Although wallpapering is more of a skill, and needs to be done well, DIY stores sell all the tools that you would need.

Make some cushions.

Soft furnishings, like cushions and curtains, really make a difference to the finish of a room.

If you have access to a sewing machine, why not try to make your own? You can find designer fabric off-cuts at bargain prices online. Try different patterns with a tonal colour palette.

There are many options and styles. A feature pendant, a floor or table lamp, low voltage LEDs - the list is endless.

Organise you pictures and photos.

When did you last look at your pictures and photos? Could you refresh your look by simply re-arranging them? Perhaps they just need new frames to give a more consistent feel?

You could place them in groups, like a gallery wall, or layer them on wooden shelving.

Change your curtains/blinds?

Curtains and blinds are significant investments. However, if you are changing a room colour, think of the impact on the window coverings.

Ready made curtains and blinds are widely available, or tailor made, on line services are great options. Always ask for samples before you buy.

Paint an item of furniture.

There are many ways that you can give new life to an old piece of furniture.

Often termed 'up-cycling', you can easily repaint something like a chair or sideboard. Use an eggshell paint that has a matt finish. It can be a very inexpensive way to add character, colour and style.

Update/increase your storage capacity.

Do you need more hooks, baskets or shelving to organise things around you?

There are a wealth of beautiful storage options which help to keep things that you need tidy, but close to hand.

Another discipline that we should all adhere to from time to time - have a good clear out!

Re-upholster a favourite chair.

Take a period piece of furniture, like an armchair, and give it a new lease of life covering it with a modern fabric.

If this is a stretch for your practical abilities, a skilled upholsterer may be the best option. A project like this can turn an old piece of furniture into a stunning feature.
